May 10, 12:20pm: Below are your final exam scores, class averages, and letter grades. The exam histogram is at the end. I've added the missing CSIDs, so that everyone can find their grade. If you don't yet know your CSID, visit: https://www.cs.arizona.edu/computing/services/csid.html The grade cutoffs are the same as I used for the exam histograms throughout the semester (89.5 and up for an 'A', 79.5 and up for a 'B', etc.). I didn't see a compelling reason to adjust them, because the class final exam average was fine, and the course average spread has natural gaps at the same places. Some instructors base the cutoffs on the "gap" approach entirely; had I followed that philosophy, the cutoffs would have been the same. If you think that the number of Es looks high, please note that only eight Es went to students who attempted the final exam. If you ignore the rest, our total of As and Bs (23) exceeds the total of the Cs, Ds, and Es (18). The replace-the-lowest-midterm-with-the-final policy can make a big difference. For example, I believe that the number of As doubled when I factored that in. The results of the graphical programs question: There seemed to be an even split between the people who thought that we had about the right quantity of graphical programs and those who wanted to have even more. No one, as far as I noticed, argued for fewer graphical programs. (I'm not surprised!) A few people commented that they would have preferred to have used Java's native graphics classes instead of a 3rd party package. Certainly we could have, but Java's native options are harder to learn to use, a burden I figured you didn't need while also trying to master Java at the beginning of the term. Also, the acm.graphics methods aren't too different from what Java supplies, which is one of the reasons I selected it over other graphics packages. Knowing the acm package can only help you learn Java's later. Thanks for a good semester, and have an enjoyable summer! --lim P.S. Double is a class (not an object!), and you always want to know what you want to accomplish (operations) before you settle on a representation! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Class: CSc 227, Program Design and Development (Spring,2007) Section: ALL NOTE: The "replace the lowest midterm with a percentage-equivalent copy of the final exam score" policy is in effect; these scores reflect this adjustment.
