VPN Installation and Use

You must have a UA NetID in order to use the VPN Client software.  For details on how to establish a UA Net ID account, change or reset a password, as well as account descriptions, see https://netid.arizona.edu.

Go to CCIT's VPN Client software page:  https://sitelicense.arizona.edu/vpn/vpn.shtml

Click on VPN Overview and Windows Step by Step Guide .  This is well worth the time it takes to read.

Click on Download VPN Client Software/Docs. Fill out the UofA VPN Registration Form and click Submit
You'll see https://sitelicense.arizona.edu/vpn/vpn_dl.html, which shows a list of files that can be downloaded.

If you are on Campus, you can click on FTP Download; otherwise, click on Authentication Download (this will prompt you for your UA Net ID and password).

Windows

Download:  vpnclient-win-is-3.6.Rel-k9.exe

Once the file is downloaded, double-click on it to run the installation.  Allow the install process to restart Windows.

To run the VPN client, select
  Start
    Programs
      University of Arizona VPN Client
        VPN Dialer

You'll be presented with the following dialog box :

Windows VPN dialog box

Click Connect and you'll be prompted for your UA NetID Username and Password.  Enter these and click OK.  Once connected, you'll be presented with an "authorized use" screen.  Click Continue.  The VPN "tunnel" is in place:  your machine has an IP address in the UofA (150.135.x.x)  range and DNS resolves it to a hostname  such as general-campus-2-1.vpn.arizona.edu.

If you double-click or right-click the yellow "lock" icon in the system tray, you can display status information or disconnect.

Linux:

Download:  vpnclient-linux-3.7.2.Rel-k9.tar.gz
                  PCF FILE (University_of_Arizona.zip)

Go to the directory where you downloaded these files.  Extract the UofA VPN configuration file:
   unzip University_of_Arizona.zip

Extract the VPN client software:
   gunzip vpnclient-linux-3.7.2.Rel-k9.tar.gz
   tar xf vpnclient-linux-3.7.2.Rel-k9.tar
This creates the directory ./vpnclient.

Install the VPN client software:
   cd vpnclient
./vpn_install (as root - accept defaults unless you know otherwise)

Enable the VPN service:
   /etc/init.d/vpnclient_init start

Copy the VPN configuration file to the proper directory:
   cd ..
   cp University_of_Arizona.pcf /etc/CiscoSystemsVPNClient/Profiles

To connect:
   vpnclient connect University_of_Arizona

You will be prompted for your UA NetID Username and Password.

After it connects, the VPN "tunnel" is in place:  your machine has an IP address in the 150.135.x.x range and DNS resolves it to a hostname  such as general-campus-2-1.vpn.arizona.edu.

Mac OSX:

Download:  vpnclient-darwin-3.7.2.Rel-GUI-k9.zip
                  PCF FILE

The files will unzip automatically.

Click on the VPN Client icon to launch the install (you will need an Administrator password).
If you accept the defaults, the Cisco VPN Client installs in Applications, the VPN command line utilities in /usr/local/bin, and VPN Profiles in /etc/CiscoSystemsVPNClient/Profiles.

Copy the UofA VPN configuration file to the proper directory:
  Using Terminal:
   cd /etc/CiscoSystemsVPNClient/Profiles
   cp /Users/username/Desktop/University_of_Arizona.pcf .

If desired, remove the sample configuration file:
   rm /etc/CiscoSystemsVPNClient/Profiles/sample.pcf

To run the VPN client:
Click on VPN (either in Dock or Applications).

You'll be presented with the following dialog box :

Macintosh VPN dialog box

Click Connect and you'll be prompted for your UA NetID Username and Password.  Enter these and click OK.  Once connected, you'll be presented with an "authorized use" screen.  Click Continue.  The VPN "tunnel" is in place:  your machine has an IP address in the UofA (150.135.x.x)  range and DNS resolves it to a hostname  such as general-campus-2-1.vpn.arizona.edu.

If you click the VPN icon again, you can select Tunnel Details to display status information or Disconnect.
