Sophos Anti-Virus Software

General Information

The University of Arizona has purchased an unlimited site license for Sophos anti-virus products. These are available at no cost to UA faculty, staff, and students for use on campus and personal systems. Regular updates of the software and virus definitions are also provided. Applying these updates is critical in order to protect your PC from new viruses.

Machines within CS

All Windows-based PCs managed by the Computer Science Department are protected by Sophos Anti-Virus. A central server monitors Lab machines and desktops and pushes updates to them on a regular basis.

Other Machines

Updates for Department laptops and personal machines come from the CS web server. The method depends on the version of Sophos used.

Authorized Users

UA faculty, staff, and students are allowed to use Sophos products offered via The University of Arizona Software Licensing (aka Sitelicense).

Only CS faculty, staff, and students are allowed to use Sophos products provided by CS servers as described below.

Sophos Versions

The current version of Sophos is 6.5, which includes a built-in facility for automatic updates. 

How to Install and Configure Sophos version 6.5

• email lab* for Sophos AutoUpdate information (web address, username, password)
     Be sure to include your CS account name in email request
• Download the Sophos installation program:
• • for Windows 2000/XP/2003, click here
  • for Windows NT, click here
  • for Windows 95/98/Me, click here
• Before installing Sophos Anti-Virus version 6.5:
• • if you have any other vendor's anti-virus software, you must uninstall it before installing Sophos.
  • if you have Sophos Anti-Virus 3.xx installed, it is recommended that you uninstall Remote Update (if you have it) and then uninstall Sophos Anti-Virus 3.xx.
• run the downloaded Sophos installation program and configure AutoUpdate
  (detailed instructions for Windows XP are at Installing and Configuring Sophos version 6.5.x.x for Windows XP; instructions for Windows NT and 9x are similar)
• 
  Note: the install directory (e.g., C:\savxpsa) can be removed after installation.
