Admission Policies
We will evaluate your credentials for admissions once we have received all required application materials. An incomplete application will not be reviewed. Please refer to the "Application Checklist" to assist you in submitting the required materials.
In fairness to you and to all other applicants, we cannot respond to any requests for a pre-evaluation of your credentials, your chances of admission, or your chances of receiving financial support. See below for additional information about financial aid.
Application Fee Waivers and Deferments
Neither the Graduate College nor the Department of Computer Science offer waivers or deferments of the application fee. Please remit the $50.00 fee with your Graduate College application materials.
Transcripts
Official transcripts from all tertiary schools attended are required. If you cannot include them when sending your application, please arrange for them to be sent to this department from the Registrar of each institution. Final official transcripts and degree certificates must be sent as soon as possible for those who are offered admission and who are currently enrolled and completing their degree program.
Letters of Recommendation
Please arrange to have a minimum of two recommendations sent to this department. The application includes forms for this purpose. Letters may also be written on official letterhead. All recommendations must be sent to us directly from the writer or enclosed in sealed envelopes with your application. The letters should be written by faculty or employers who are familiar with your work and who can testify to your research abilities and your potential for success in a graduate program. The same letters used for your application can also be used when applying for an assistantship.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Score
The general exam scores are required of all applicants. This requirement cannot be waived. Please register for these exams in a timely manner in order to meet our application deadlines. (For this department, GRE scores do not lose their validity over time.) Your application will not be reviewed if you do not submit these scores.
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
International applicants must demonstrate competency in the English language. We require a minimum TOEFL score of 600 paper-based, 250 computer-based or 100 internet-based. If however, an applicant has completed 30 units in a U.S. institution or has received a degree from a U.S. institution, the TOEFL requirement can be waived. (Score results are only valid for two years from the test date. This is an ETS rule and neither the University nor the department is able to extend the validity of the score).
The Evaluation Process
Your application file will be evaluated by the Admissions Committee when it is complete. (i.e. all required documentation, letters, etc. have arrived.) Each applicant is evaluated carefully, taking all aspects of your application into account. Our stated minimums are only guidelines and not rigid policy. An applicant whose record is weak in one aspect (e.g. GRE scores) may be considered for admission if a strength exists in another area (e.g. excellent GPA, letters). In evaluating your application, the committee will look for the following:
- Adequate Math and Computer Science background
- Excellent academic performance
- Good communication skills
- Intellectual potential
- (for doctoral applicants) Aptitude for research
