My Story
I am a member of the Laboratory Staff (alias "lab") of the Department of Computer Science at The University of Arizona. For 8 years, most of my time was spent working on research projects for professors in the department, mostly writing and debugging code in C. I have assisted with releases of the Scorpion, VMS-Icon, Multical, xkernel and Janus compiler projects. Every once in a while, I'd actually install a software package, like the MIT X Window System and Adobe's FrameMaker.
In the summer of 1997, the department added an undergraduate computer lab, and decided to move from a primarily MacIntosh environment to PCs running Windows NT 4.0. Nobody in the department had expertise with Windows, especially with NT, and I moved into the position of Windows Systems Administrator. Sometimes, people will refer to me as the "Windows Expert", which always makes me laugh; I don't think there really is such a thing. We have now migrated from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 to Windows XP. Our Windows domain has two domain controllers running Windows Server 2003, and all of our workstations are running XP, at this point.
I received my B.A. cum laude in Mathematics from The University of California at Santa Barbara in 1972, and attended a year of graduate school there to earn a secondary teaching certificate. I spent four years teaching and substitute teaching junior high and high school math and science in California, Virginia, and Arizona. I gave it up when I got the opportunity to work on a M.S. degree in Computer Science at the University of Arizona, which I received in 1979. In 1989, I returned to the Computer Science Department as a member of the lab staff.
In my free time, I enjoy playing on the computer, sewing and reading. My husband and I try to take a couple of long weekends in Puerto Penasco, Mexico each year, and get out in the woods for backpacking, camping and fishing. I think our extended family is now complete, with a grandson in Colorado, Brett (born July 95), and a granddaughter and grandson in San Francisco, Ciara (August 96) and Cormac (October 98). With our wonderful grandchildren, it seems that more and more of our free time is spent with them, and less doing other things (we're not complaining!!).
In December 2006, I did something I've never done before -- I walked in a half marathon. Click here to find out why.
