Position Description
Position Title: Graduate Assistant, Technical Report Archive & Image Library (TRAIL) Project

Position Summary:
The UA Libraries is currently seeking a Graduate Assistant who will assist with metadata input for scientific technical research reports. The student will also assist with activities related to the development of the Technical Report Archive and Image Library (TRAIL), a national digital technical report collection currently in development by the Greater Western Library Alliance in partnership with the Center for Research Libraries, and more than fifty other research institutions.
Working Hours: This is a .50 FTE (20 hours per week) appointment. Hours will vary from 8AM to 5PM, Monday-Friday, and will be determined at the time of hire. Duration: Hire will be made on a semester by semester basis, with the possibility of renewal for the second semester.
Salary: Pay rate is at the annualized salary of $27,000 (prorated by .50 FTE = $6,750 per semester) with benefits.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Conduct inventory and assessment of the print technical research reports to be added to the TRAIL digital collection.
• Perform assessment and deselection of duplicate print holdings for those reports now available online in a secure electronic format.
• Input descriptive metadata using MARC and/or Dublin Core schemas for individual reports.
• Perform quality control check and inventory report monitoring for evaluation and error reporting for scanned images.
• Meet weekly with supervisor to report on progress and discuss questions related to the Library and its collections.
• Other duties, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Graduate student enrolled in the School of Information Resources & Library Science, or related fields.
· Have an admitting GPA of 3.0 or higher if a new student or maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA for all UA graduate credit courses.
· Able to work 20 hours per week beginning fall semester (appointment is 8/17/09-1/3/10), with the possibility of renewal for spring semester.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Excellent communication skills.
· Demonstrated knowledge of/experience with Microsoft Office systems, particularly with Excel or Microsoft Access.
· Experience working with OCLC Worldcat.
· Experience working in web-based environments.
· Experience with digital conversion projects.
· Interest in or demonstrated knowledge of/experience with scientific publications, science libraries and/or history of science.
