Position Summary |
The University of Arizona Libraries, Digital Library Information Systems Team (DLIST), seeks individuals for the DCAP (Digital Content, Access, and Publishing Group) work team leader position. Incumbent supervises and directs the work of 6 staff, including applications, systems and development staff. Provides mentoring and coaching to staff, creating an environment in which goals can be achieved and career development is fostered. Position is responsible for programming and programming support of Library applications in a LAMP environment (Enterprise Red Hat Linux, Apache 2.x, MySQL, PHP 5).
Position is also responsible for the Libraries' web site and Libraries' intranet site. Responsible for reviewing and monitoring work performance in the developmental reviews of staff supervised. Ensures peer reviews are done tri-annually and that follow-ups are done as needed. Ensures budgets are being spent efficiently to meet the work of the team. Leads and participates in the hiring process, primarily within the workteam. This position may be required to work evenings and weekends.
All work that addresses customer needs will be performed. Individuals can expect that this work will include team-wide and Library-wide work. As customers' needs change, our work patterns may change. As a result, team and Library work is negotiated within the team, the end product being an agreement in writing defining performance expectations.
The incumbent performs the work appropriate for a Computing Manager, Assistant, as needed within the team, to meet the changing needs of the Libraries' customers. As those needs change or disappear it may be necessary to reassign staff to areas in greater need of support and to change work hours to accommodate our customers.

Duties and Responsibilities |
Work Team Management: 25%
* Supervises, hires, trains and directs the work of permanent and temporary employees and student assistants.
* Delegates work to DCAP team members based on priority, skill levels and current work loads.
* Meets with team members on a bi-weekly basis for project updates.
* Identifies and coordinates training for work team members as needed and provides mentoring and coaching to permanent, temporary and student staff.
* Ensures team members share mentoring and coaching responsibilities. Fosters an environment in which culturally diverse people cooperate.
* Participates in the Libraries' peer review process for permanent staff and drafts the annual performance appraisal for each work team member
Project Management: 30%
* Administers, coordinates and participates in the development of Library-related products and services provided and supported by DCAP.
* Identifies upcoming projects and necessary work competencies requiring DCAP participation.
* Works with team members and stakeholders to define and manage projects utilizing the Libraries' project management methodologies and practices.
* Coordinates with technical and non-technical users in determining feasibility and most effective means of accomplishing project goals.
* Ensures that timelines are set and met according to the project plan.
* Helps to develop long-range plans for the Libraries' storage and information architecture, enterprise services, database back-ends, database applications and standard system interfaces.
* Initiates projects or actions, setting long and short-term goals.
* Makes recommendations to the team leader regarding available technical expertise within DCAP as well as insufficient technical competencies.
* Actively participates on DLIST Leadership Team, including attendance at All-Staff, Library Reports, Open Dialogue and Learning Network meetings. Part of this work includes reviewing and recommending changes in team structure and work expectations to efficiently and effectively accomplish DLIST and Library objectives.
Programming & Programming Support: 40%
* Works with Institutional Repository work team and DCAP work team members to define standards and best practices for tools and programming languages used.
* Works with work team members to determine development environments and deployment strategies used by DCAP.
* Coordinates with other DLIST work groups to ensure that appropriate programming and server staffing is available for all supported applications.
* Provides leadership in the design of new systems and deployment strategies for web-based applications.
*Maintains an in-depth understanding of the technical landscape, identifying possible opportunities for Library projects and collaborations.
*Participates in the design and development of web-based applications.
*Makes recommendations for leading edge technologies that meet the business requirements for a given project
Server Support: 5%
*Works with server support staff to determine appropriate server configurations based on the needs of applications.
*Works with server support staff to ensure that both development and production environments meet the needs of the application development staff. |
Arizona Board of Regents
Minimum Qualifications |
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Management Information Systems AND five years of directly related experience which includes one year of supervisory experience; OR, seven years of related computing experience which includes three years directly related experience including one year of supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education. |
Additional Minimum Qualifications |
* At least 1 year of demonstrated experience with leadership and supervisory skills (specifically full-time permanent employees), including training, coaching, mentoring and coordinating the work of others and/or projects.
* At least 4 years of working experience in programming development. |
Preferred Qualifications |
* Demonstrated ability to work proactively and constructively to identify, define and solve problems with team, between teams and with individuals on teams.
* Strong leadership, communication and time management skills including the ability to prioritize, delegate and work within deadlines.
* Experience developing project plans using project management software, preferably Microsoft Project.
* Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced/multi-tasking environment.
* Proven ability to work in a team environment by successfully participating in a collaborative, team-based, customer-centered environment, and to work effectively with diverse faculty, staff and students.
* At least 1 year of experience with PHP 5, with knowledge of and experience with training and/or mentoring technical staff in object-oriented PHP programming.
* Experience supporting COTS (custom, off-the-shelf) applications that are typical of a major research library technical environment.
* Expertise in object-oriented methodologies, including but not limited to MVC and standard OO design patterns.
* Demonstrated proficiency and experience with CSS, X/HTML, JavaScript and/or AJAX.
* Familiarity with web development best practices, including W3C standards and Section 508 requirements.
* Experience with current user-centered design methods including contextual inquiry, task analysis, cognitive walkthroughs, usability studies and user workshops.
* Experience with Linux application environment including experience with common system architectures and infrastructures, including Apache HTTP 2.x Server.
* Experience with installation and/or maintenance of database systems, preferably MySQL, including a sound working knowledge of SQL, database systems and database design and normalization.
* Experience performing system analysis, design, application programming and implementation using specification standards, current infrastructure and data models.
* Familiar with coding standards, organizational programming skills, good commenting practices and security-related best practice. |
