Advanced undergraduate and/or graduate students sought for an exciting and challenging project at the cutting edge of various web technologies. The sub-projects fall loosely under the umbrella of knowledge management and informal distance learning. Aspects include: clustering and visual navigation methods for large content sources like Wikipedia, delivery of educational content to small-format and hand-held devices, use of social networking sites like Facebook for informal learning, and the delivery of content to 3D virtual worlds like Second Life. Work will also explore the use of social networks for "citizen science." Framework is .NET and web services. Serious coding skills required, and flexible approach to problem-solving, with rapid development cycles. Hours are very flexible, with one weekly meeting. Various employment arrangements possible: GRA for 20 hours a week at the Astronomy rate ($24/hour), CPT at $30 to $35 per hour depending on experience (only for U.S. Citizens), undergraduate stipends (15-20 hours a week is preferred) at $10-15 per hour depending on experience, and independent studies opportunities are possible too.
Skill Set:
Essential - ASP.NET C#, HTML, JavaScript (solid knowledge), Java,
Basic System Admin experience, Understanding of web service concepts.
Desirable - XML/XSLT, AJAX techniques (Web2.0), Website management,
(IIS/APACHE(win32), DNS Registration, SSL certificates, permissions,
etc), Flash 9 AS3.
Optional - Facebook and/or Open Social knowledge, experience in Web
marketing, Inkscape or Illustrator or comparable SVG (Scalable vector
graphics) content creation.
