Related Majors
The University of Arizona offers several majors related to computer science. Detailed information can be found at each department's homepage. We also offer a more descriptive comparison of computing-intensive programs on campus.
Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE)
Hardware orientation - What are the mechanics behind the box? These programs prepare students for careers in research and development in such areas as communications, computers, control, electomagnetics, microelectronics, optics, and signal processing.
Systems and Industrial Engineering (SIE)
Study of how computing technology can be used effectively with the human workforce. Often involves a manufacturing environment. SE is concerned with the processes and methodology of modeling, analyzing, and designing technologically advanced systems that function safely, effectively, and economically. It requires appreciation and understanding of machines, people, software, hardware, materials, and energy.
Management Information Systems (MIS)
Management information systems involves the use of computers in organizations and the integration of computer skills with the functional areas of managements. Education in MIS enables students to pursue careers involving the use, definition, analysis, design, implementation, and operation of computer information systems. Less emphasis on Math and more on business course work: economics, accounting, finance.
Mathematics
Concentrations are available in pure, applied, or computer mathematics or in probability and statistics. The faculty conduct research in the following areas: algebra and number theory, analysis, geometry, and probability theory.
Interdisciplinary Studies
Interdisciplinary studies allows students to develop an academic program that meets their individual academic goals. Students design a program that focuses on three different areas of study, one of which can be computer science. A total of 21 units per area (including 12 upper-division units) are required.
