I'm from Portland, OR originally, and I completed my Bachelors at the University of Oregon in Computer Science. While I was there a completed an undergrad thesis on natural language generation. Now I'm studying natural language processing further at the University of Arizona.
I'm interested in learning about how machine learning models learn from text in order to complete tasks. By what mechanisms do they process and retain information? What concepts of language are they capable of understanding? What sort of assumptions are we encoding in our model designs? By gaining a better understanding of our current methods, we can improve them and adapt them to new applications.
What long-term project do you want to work on?
I would like to create natural language processing systems that can adapt to new domains while still performing well.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy working in an environment that values education and collaboration. Every day I learn something new and often I learn it from my colleagues. We all want to gain a better understanding of what we study. Some other jobs feel like a waste of time, but as a student, whenever I find some new information, I know the day was productive.
What are your career goals?
I would like to pursue a career in research or research-adjacent engineering.
Tell us something interesting about yourself!
I love to cook! Trying new recipes is exciting and messing up is half the fun. I also enjoy watching movies. I highly recommend any Werner Herzog film.
